Reliance

A north east of Scotland fishing skipper has confirmed the quality of the innovative hydralert bilge monitoring system. John Clarke, skipper of the Banff registered Reliance has ordered a second Hydralert,in addition to the one already fitted in his engine room, to monitor the vessel’s fish room, supplementary to a float switch bilge alarm.

Float switch alarms have several well documented shortcomings

• False alarms from splashing are common
• Switches can jam in the on position when the vessel rolls heavily ( so operators switch them off until the switch can be freed)
• Switches can jam in the off position ( so rendering them useless)
• Floating parts can lose their buoyancy, so they stop floating, but will still test as ok!
• Fixings can loosen off, allowing switches to move around and become jammed.
• Wiring can be damaged, and only detected when equipment is tested manually, or when undetected flooding occurs.
• Float switch locations make them difficult to access and test, so testing is rarely carried out.
